Make Sure Fire Suppression Systems Are In Place For Your Safety

One reason for strict laws regarding Fire Suppression Systems is because of the lack of sprinkler systems in the MGM hotel in Las Vegas about thirty years. Many people died in that fire that started in one of the hotel restaurant kitchens. There was an area of the hotel that was exempt from fire suppression sprinklers.

The hotel, which is now one of the safest in the city, did not have them there because they did not want to pay the extra money. And they were within the code anyway. But many people died and the code was changed. The people died primarily because of the toxic fumes created by burning plastic and other synthetic materials.

Now because of the knowledge that sprinklers are needed in all hotel areas Las Vegas is one of the safest cities in the country and even in the world when it comes to fire suppression systems. But if you plan on staying in a hotel in another city make sure you ask some questions before checking in.

Make sure the hotel has an up to date fire suppression system in place. Ask if the hotel has a fire procedure and policy in place. Ask if they have regular fire drills to keep all employees up to date on the fire evacuation procedure. Do not be afraid to ask these important safety questions.

Ask if your smoke detector in your room has been recently tested. Ask when the batteries are changed. Ask it they have standard fire alarm tests or trial runs at the hotel. Ask what is the safety policy and procedure in case of a fire. These might be time consuming questions but even if the hotel personnel thinks you are unduly concerned remember this is you and your family you are protecting.

The hotel staff will of course not to worry. They will say they have the updated equipment and are within the fire code regulations. But you can also contact the local fire department for more information. They will direct you to the right agency to call for objective information about the hotel. This is your safety you are talking about here after all.

You also want to stay alert when you are in a bar or restaurant where drinks are served. There is a big concern about drinking too much and then driving. Which of course is a big problem.

Stay sober in the bar and before you start to drink find the exits so you will not have to try to find them later after a drink or two. You need to be your own fire safety system at all times.
