Productivity is greatly increased when one is working in a clean and tidy office. Proper and regular cleaning of your workplace is extremely important. This post is meant to help you to become more effective at your day to day tasks by simply putting a bit of care into cleaning your working environment. Crystal Clean Solutions have been around since 1997 and have many companies who have given written testimony to the effectiveness of our cleaning services.

Step 1 : Prepare yourself

You need to make sure that you have enough equipment before you get started. Imagine your cleaning cupboard at home and this should give you an indication, after all your office is simply a big home. A mop, brush and vacuum cleaner should be the beginning followed by dusters, cloths, floor cleaning solution (or a dry carpet cleaning solution if you have carpets instead of tiled floors) and maybe a toilet brush. Speaking about the toilet brush don’t forget the disinfectant spray and maybe some air freshener. The health and safety people would probably lock me up if I failed to mention that you should get some rubber gloves as well.

Step Two : Assess the work to be performed.

Start by letting some sunshine and fresh air into the room. Get the windows open! Once you do this you will notice that the job doesn’t seem to be as bad. Look at the job you are facing and see if there is anything that requires special attention (grease marks, stains on the floors or furniture). Set yourself a goal in terms of how long you will take to finish the job and then start at one end of the room. Make sure that your cleaning equipment is close by but not in the way.

Step 3: Get rid of the rubbish.

First get rid of all the food wrappers, papers and general office rubbish and empty the bins. Separate the recyclable from the other rubbish and place them into separate bags. This would already have made the office cleaner and the job will seem less daunting.

Step four: Move the stationery and equipment

You need to make sure that all surfaces are clear before you can start cleaning properly. Disconnect lights, printers, calculators, computers and the like. If possible move all of this out to a separate room so that you have more space. Any small furniture such as bins, chairs etc should be moved out of the way and don’t forget to take out anything that might be cluttering up the area like pens, books, stationery etc

Step 5: Dust the whole office

Since your area should be pretty empty at this stage with the exception of some of the larger furniture you can now start to dust all surfaces in the office. Make sure that you start by dusting the high areas first (book shelves, light fittings etc) otherwise the dust from these will settle on the surfaces you have already cleaned.

Step 6: Vacuum clean everything your eye can see.

Since your floor is relatively clear, try to move some of the larger furniture around so that you can get into those dark corners. Since all the dust from the previous step should now be on the floor, get out the vacuum cleaner and suck up everything! Every chair, blind, curtain, desk and piece of carpet should be vacuumed properly. Vacuum any empty cupboards, drawers etc as well and once this is all done, move all the furniture back into it original positions before you proceed to the next step.

Step 7: Point and shoot

Now is the time to get out your furniture or disinfectant spray formula and clean all the furniture, office working areas, window sills etc. Depending on the spray you are using you may sometimes have to wait between 10 and 15 minutes before you can wipe the spray off. Once this is done, start carrying back all the pieces of office equipment that you removed earlier making a point of cleaning them as you bring them back. Don’t spray computer monitors with furniture polish! That will be a mistake that you won’t forget.

7 Simple Steps to a Clean Closet

1. Get Rid of What you Don’t Want or Need – This process doesn’t have to be dreaded-think of it as shopping in your closet! Try on the things you haven’t worn recently. Is it something you would buy again? Keep it if the answer is yes. (Make sure it fits well, is in style, and that it doesn’t need major repairs.) The rest should be consigned or donated. Get the clothes that don’t fit currently out of your closet and into storage if your weight tends to fluctuate-put them in plastic bins in your basement or other storage area. Remember this: Your closet should be considered prime real estate, devoted only to clothes you currently wear.

2. Categorize

* Hanging – dresses, pants, shirts, button-ups, long items

* Folded – tee-shirts, sweaters, sweatshirts, jeans, shorts, sweats

3. Color-coordinate each category- Organize clothes left to right, light to dark, white to black.

4. Get matching hangers – You can save space and have a great looking closet when all your hangers are the same. (I prefer the thin velvety ones; they are compact, clothes don’t fall off of them, and they won’t create unsightly shoulder bumps.)

5. Hang belts, ties, and scarves – A pull-out rack is perfect for hanging these things. It will save time and space and keep your closet looking tidy. Hooks are another great option.

6. Use drawers – for undergarments, socks, hosiery, jewelry, and pashminos. Divider kits are a particularly handy tool for keeping socks and undergarments organized.

7. Use shelves – if possible. They are a better option than drawers because folded items that are neatly stacked on shelves or in cubbyholes are easy to access-you don’t have to dig through crowded drawers for your stuff. Things that work particularly well on shelves are purses, jeans, tee-shirts, sweaters, shorts, and sweats.

Put off-season clothes and shoes on high shelves where you won’t be tempted to grab them!

Lean To Greenhouse? The Broke Mans Method

People with the endurance to build their own thriving ecosystem in their back yard just have to be applauded. The skill, aptitude and not to mention, patience required are incredible but even with all these fine qualities the one challenge that cannot be avoided is cost.

No matter how inexperienced you are, if you are not able to build a lean to greenhouse (or lean to conservatory) cheaply it might be that you are trying to over complicate things. Lean Tos are not difficult to build, especially the free standing ones. You will however, need to get the right materials for the building and this might get a bit expensive if you are not careful.

A mini lean to conservatory or greenhouse is extremely cheap to erect. They are tiny units which can be used in places like flats where there is no, or limited room for a garden. If you feel that you can build a postbox or a dogs kennel then you would most probably be able to build a decent mini lean to.

Don’t forget to take your environment into account. If you are prone to heavy wind or rain storms then it is probably best to have a solid wooden frame with a glass covering. Since glass is not the cheapest of materials the chances are better to save a few pounds if you use the correct size of fiberglass. Wood is not expensive and any lumber yard will have what you need.

On the topic of lumber, if you are doing the job yourself, a wooden greenhouse would probably be the most cost effective one to build. Whether the greenhouse is stand alone or attached your budget will be within reason by sticking to wood. A bag of nails, a hammer (which you probably already have) and some glass, fiberglass or polyethylene covering, is all that you should need.

Polyethylene is cheap and effective in areas with good weather. Wood, however, will need some kind of treatment if it needs to withstand excessive sun or a cold, rainy environment. A simple coat of varnish every now and then should suffice.

Probably the most expensive greenhouse you can build is an aluminum greenhouse. It is a pain to work with and even though it is a common enough material, it is still rather pricey. These greenhouses are meant to be attached to a garage or house and if you were even thinking about trying to cut costs this way I would suggest to forget it.

Although not something which you can build yourself out of raw materials, one option to consider is purchasing a D-I-Y uPVC lean to conservatory installation kit. They are usually easy to install (if you follow the manufacturer’s instructions), they have no trouble in any kind of weather, they are very easy to clean and relatively cheap to purchase. Obviously they are not as cheap as the wooden version which you can build yourself but I will almost guarantee that it will be standing (in a good condition) a lot longer.

Water Fountains Safeguards

What should you be aware of about fountain basic safety? Whether you have a garden water feature outside, a tabletop fountain or a mounted wall water fountain indoors, there are several general suggestions you want to keep in mind to keep you and other people safe and sound.

First off, realize that protecting people from slipping is a primary concern,. Legal responsibility for injuries can be problematic both in the office and in the home if anyone falls due to a defective fountain or the inappropriate positioning of a fountain.

It is best to have an electrician install a power outlet immediately behind your wall mounted fountain. When you’re using a regular plug, the outlet must be recessed. Also, the wires that extend from the underside of a wall-mounted fountain can be dangerous. The improper wiring of fountains is particularly dangerous to youngsters. The use of extension cords is greatly discouraged since these have caused injuries .

When dealing with wall mounted water features, be sure to hang the fountain on the wall using the appropriate brackets. Be sure that the mounting brackets are secure or else use your own stabilizing anchors. Lightweight fountains are occasionally mounted with nails. If this is the case, be certain that these water features are high above the reach of children or pets.

A tabletop fountain should only be placed on a flat surface. If the water feature is placed on an uneven surface, it will splash unevenly and this could cause leakage to the ground below. Ensure that the fountain is not splashing beyond the bowl, because even a minimal amount of water on the floor may cause someone to fall.

You should always make certain that the water inside of wall mounted water fountains is always moving and re-circulating. Stagnant water can be a health risk. If you disconnect the fountain you should change the stagnant water. Unhealthy bacteria can grow in stagnant water resulting in illness. Regular replacement of the water provides oxygen thereby interrupting bacterial development.

This understanding applies to all styles of water features, from wall mounted water features to tabletops and garden water features. Besides preventing bacteria, you also should discourage the formation of algae and mineral scale. Wall mounted water features will require water treatment for cleanliness. However, it is recommended that you only use chemical free and child-safe treatments. In addition to applying this treatment you should attempt to clean the fountain regularly.

A wall mounted water feature must be taken apart and thoroughly cleaned at least every 6 months. However, the water itself should really be replaced much more regularly. These tips can assist in keeping family and friends safe throughout the year.

How To Clean Upholstery And Carpets

There are many different ways which you can take when approaching a carpet and upholstery cleaning task. The reason you are cleaning (general clean, removal of stains etc) as well as the kind of fabric you are cleaning both determine the kind of method you will choose. Whether you are going to use a professional carpet cleaning service or you are planning on doing it yourself, here are some basic guidelines to follow to make sure you don’t damage the material.

Types of Carpet Cleaning.

In a nutshell there are five general methods of cleaning: hot water extraction (steam cleaning), shampooing, quick dry (bonnet), dry foam and dry absorbent compound cleaning.

Steam cleaning (a.k.a hot water extraction) is probably the most popular of all the different methods but not always the best since the drying time, depending on the material, can be as long as 12 hours. A high-powered pump sprays a cleaning fluid into the carpet which is then sucked out immediately by a strong vacuum.

There are many different types of carpet shampoo machines available on the market. Many of them stand upright with a tank for the solution and a couple of nylon brushes underneath. If you can imagine somebody manually cleaning with a scrubbing brush, this is basically the same that happens with a machine. The carpet is scoured with the nylon brushes loosening the dirt which is then vacuumed up later after the carpet has dried. This method has the same unfortunate downside in that it can take over 12 hours for the carpet to dry

The quick dry or bonnet method might seem to be the same as shampooing the carpet, in fact the machinery is very similar. Instead of the two or three nylon brushes, the machine has a couple of highly absorbent buffing pads. A special quick dry cleaning solution is firstly distributed over the carpet and the machine then buffs the carpet clean by absorbing the solution as well as the dirt. It only takes about an hour to dry so this method is a must for high traffic areas.

Dry foam cleaning is a hybrid of the steam and shampooing methods. A machine with rollers first spreads foam over the carpet after which a vacuum cleaner is used to remove all the remaining foam and the dirt. The foam dries quickly, often within an hour or two.

Dry absorbent compound is a powder which contains solvents and detergents, which are spread lightly on the carpet. You, or the professional you hire, uses a machine which scrubs the mixture into the carpet fibers and the carpet is left to stand for a bit. After a little wait, the vacuum cleaner is then used to suck up the compound (which has by now absorbed all the dirt) as a result the carpet stays as dry as it was when you started. This is probably the best method to use if you have thick carpets which can go moldy underneath if they stay wet for too long.

Upholstery Cleaning Options

The upholstery fabric is what normally determines what kind of cleaning method will be used. Velvets and silks, for example, can only be dry cleaned and, unless you really know what you are doing, is best left to an upholstery cleaning professional. Other more durable fabrics can be steam cleaned similar to carpets as they do not suffer any side effects from getting wet. The hot extraction method (steam cleaning) is identical to that which is used for carpets except that the nozzle is a small, hand held version. Hand shampooing can also be used but instead of using a machine the cleaning fluid is agitated into a foam and this foam is then applied to the fabric using a sponge.

Identifying Upholstery

Many people are unaware of the best method to choose when cleaning furniture. In many cases you should find a label (possibly on the underside of one of the cushions) which will state the manufactures instructions, suggestions and warning. The most important thing to look out for is the code, either right at the top or right at the bottom of the label with either a ‘S’, ‘W’ or ‘SW’. ‘S’ indicates that the fabric should be dry cleaned while wet cleaning is indicated with the ‘W’. Materials which can be both wet and dry cleaned are indicated by the ‘SW

Starting a tiny garden: good soil tips?

I want to start an tiny garden in my back yard. I have the spot picked out, which is coved in grass now (of course). My question is, do you have any tips on types of soil via bags at the local home improvement store I can get? I’m sure the soil now is not the greatest.

I’m planning on digging away the grass to about 4 inches deep. I don’t think I’ll put one of those black ‘mats’ down to stop the weeds since I’m perfectly fine pulling them out by hand.

I am a cherry tomato addict, and just want to plant a few plants to suppliment my habit haha.
